The term "Hematicus"® is derived from the Greek word "Haema" for blood, and the Latin word "Custos" for guard - and literally means "The Custodian of Blood." The company was established in 1999 by Paul G. Loubser, MD to develop key technologies aimed at perioperative blood conservation. Our core technology, the "Automated Whole Blood Sequestration Reservoir System" or the "Virtual Venous Reservoir®" is a patented system for managing autologous whole blood during surgery. Hematicus® is currently engaged in raising capital to fund the objectives of the company and welcomes licensing arrangments, joint ventures, partnerships with other organizations, collaborative projects with industry and academic sectors. Various enhancements to the VVR® are currently being developed and refined for clinical application worldwide. Hematicus® philosophy is global in nature and focused on not only developed nations, but emerging markets as well. Hematicus® also conducts research and inquiry into selective topics related to whole blood sequestration and acute normovolemic hemodilution (ANH) including clinical reports, surveys and mathematical models. Hematicus® also sponsors the ANH Bibliography, the largest compendium of peer-reviewed publications related to ANH, which now references over 600 publications. The ANH Bulletin is published in alternate months, and provides news items such as technology updates, meeting information and literature reviews.
